Rum Rebellion officially released Another Round, the bands fourth major release, in March 2015. This latest effort by Portland, Oregons infamous band of drunken scurvy punks and hooligans harkens back to the more traditional Irish roots of the bands conception while simultaneously delivering a bolt of mosh pit inducing punk rock. The addition of accordion on the recording unobtrusively compliments and completes the bands signature sound, a unique blend of folk, punk, maritime, and Oi! influences which has been described as something akin to the best of the Real McKenzies by Maximum Rock 'n' Roll.
I seriously cannot say enough about these guys, they are one of my favorite newer bands, says Counter Culture zine. Rum Rebellion has grown tremendously in the last ten years, rising from humble seeds planted through busking outside of Flogging Molly shows to sharing the stage with legends such as The Misfits, The Tossers, and Street Dogs. Adding accordion has helped bring us back to the original vision of the bandthe ability to orchestrate our unique instrumentation into a sound that is defined by diversity, creativity, and energy, explains singer Dave Noyes. We listened to our fans, who said they liked the power and clarity of our last album but missed the more acoustic feel we started the band with. We believe we have achieved a harmonious balance on Another Round.
Rum Rebellion began in 2005 with all-acoustic instrumentation and played sea shanties, jigs, and reels. The bands namesake reflects the historical feel of the bands conception The Rum Rebellion was an actual historical conflict in New South Wales territory of Australia, brought on by the governors desire to eliminate the use of rum as a trading and purchasing commodity. Too bad the people, including the army, didnt like that idea.
By 2006 the band added bass and drums and began writing its own tunes, which brought in punk and Oi! influences. Ten years and over 1,000 shows later, Rum Rebellion is now a national touring act, playing frequently in Western US cities and traveling across the country annually. This summers tour, in support of the Another Round album release, will be the bands most extensive tour yet, with over 30 dates across the nation.
I have listened to a lot of punk rock over the years and I am not easily impressed with a lot of the newer bands, who seem to be mainly generic hardcore and tributes to bands from the early 80s, continues Counter Culture. There are few bands who have come along in the late 90s and after 2000 who I felt were original or really had that genuine quality about them. Rum Rebellion is one of them.
